Pastoral Prayer

The Fellowship of the Holy Spirit
2 Corinthians 13:13

1.
Today, we worship God in the Thanksgiving Sunday. In most countries, the harvest is already done. The third Thursday of November came from the American tradition.

Israel and Korea use lunar calendar. Their thanksgiving is in August. Traditionally, Korea had not known God, so they worshipped a number of gods.

Japan is famous with a number of gods. Korea has about that much. They believed the existence of gods in mountain, river, and so on.

They have unwisely worshipped so many gods.

Some Christians insist to worship God in the Full-moon as Christian thanksgiving. Viewed in the Bible and tradition, it is plausible. We must make sure, however, that God is not one of the many traditional gods.

2.
We thank God who created the heaven and the earth, blessed us to harvest these fruits and grains.

God is the Creator. At the same time, God is the subject of history, controlling the universe. He guides the Sun, wind, and cloud. He also blesses the earth. We are not wise if we insist the grains we harvest are ours. They came from the hands of God. We must give thanks to God.

3.
The fellowship of the Holy Spirit means the Holy Spirit comes upon us and we live according to the guidence of God.

Today's scripture has been used as the 'benediction' of most Korean churches. The Bible has a number of blessings. Ministers may bless their congregations using any one of them. But the reason why 2 Cor 13:13 has been preferred is because it has the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit.

성령님의 교통하심은 fellowship of the Holy Spirt입니다. The fellowship of the Holy Spirit has something to do with the communion of the saints in the Apostles' Creed.

The fellowship of the Holy Spirit and the communion of the saints are one in reality. The communion of saints without the Holy Spirit is wrong.

4.
If we are living according to our own desire, we are not with the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, disconnected from God. Life without thanksgiving is that of the spiritual disconnection.

The Holy Spirit is provides our lives. Humans are actually but dirt. The Spirit of God came upon humans and they became 'living beings.' Guided by the Spirit, we possess the life.

5.
We are bodies of God. As we obey the commandments of God, we are with the fellowship of the Holy Spirit.

What a miserable it would be if body does not listen to head? As we obey the commands of God, we experience the fellowship of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit comes to us and controls us. We give birth fruits, the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5).

6.
Abraham had the divine calling, and he obeyed. He was a man of the Holy Spirit.

7.
Before Abraham, people gathered at Sinar and built Babel tower. They did not listen to God but acted as their sinful desire directed.

And they opposed to God. Their motive was about the same as Adam and Eve when they ate the forbidden fruit. They did not recognize God and the Creator and they served themselves as their creators.

And the result was destruction. They could not communicate each other. There was no 'fellowship' and 'communion' among themselves.

8.
The God who called Abraham now calls us today. Each time as we read the Bible, we had better identify ourselves with the biblical figures. This is a good Bible reading.

As we read David, we praise the Lord as our Shepherds. As for the sins of David, we repent our sins.

9.
God called Abraham to come out of his father and the hometown. We also came out of our hometowns and live here in the US, the foreign land. This is what we obeyed to the call of God.

To worship God in the US in the Thanksgiving Sunday is but a blessing.

10.
Like Abraham, we obey God. With the obedience, we will get the blessings Abraham had. There is no other beauty in the world.

11.
Some argue that in the time of Abraham, God spoke directly; today, we have but indirect messages. Is is true?

In the days of Abraham, only one person, Abraham, answered to God. Today, a number of Christians answer to God. In SF, we have Golden Gate Church.

12.
Abraham is the first personal name in the New Testament. New Testament is the book, witnessing the salvation history of God, started with Abraham. We see the lineage of the salvation from Abraham through David to Jesus.

13.
Abraham welcomed Lazarus, the begger, hugging him in his bosom.  Following Abraham, we will serve people as hosts in the Kingdom of God.

14.
This is the way of life with the fellowship of the Holy Spirit.

15.
Body is to listen to head. We are body of Jesus our Head. Naturally, therefore, we are to move as He directs.

We obey voice of the Holy Spirit. This life is blessing itself.

We stop when the Holy Spirit asks. We go as He commands. We experience grace at each step of our lives.

16.
The disciples could not get any fish. As they listened to Jesus, however, they had countless fishes, that broke nets.

17.
We harvest what we obeyed to the voice of God. All things without obedience are not precious fruits. The fruits are to be our goals. They are to be our daily bread.

18.
Children are the fruits. Human relationship in Christ is the fruit. All the brothers and sisters in faith are the fruits. Health is the fruit. God's church is the fruit.

Head is to control body. You are to control yourselves. You have to control your own emotion.

There was a driving campaign: "You must be careful in driving." "The care" in Chinese character is controling one's mind. "Care" is, therefore, "self-control." You must control yourself as you drive. What about living your live?

20.
Sefl-control seems to be hardest one. Ancient teachers taught us that anyone who controls oneself is stronger than any victor.

True self-control is possible only when you rely on the Holy Spirit. You had better ask the Holy Spirit in all things.

21.
In obdience to head, body enjoys freedom. Organic connection is to be made.

We are to be connected to the Holy Spirit organically, and we could obey the Holy Spirit naturally.

We are to ask for the fellowship with the Holy Spirit.

We give thanks to God who gives strength and wisdom day by day. Amen.

O God, our Father. Do not let us stand up by ourselves but control us with the Holy Spirit. In Jesus' name, Amen.

축도
May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God our Father, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen. (Paster : Cho Unseok)
