Pastoral Prayer
Gracious God. We thank you very much. The lives you have given us are so beautiful. The joy that we get daily living with the loving people that you sent to us is so great. We thank you for loving these sinful beings. We thank you permitting us to pray and worship you. Be your name glorified through this worship. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Jesus thought how to compare that generation. According to Jesus, they are like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling out to others: "We played the flute for you, and you did not dance;; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn."

After this, Jesus talked about John the Baptist. "For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, 'He has a demon.' The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, 'Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and "sinners.""

So to speak, the life of John the Baptist and that of Jesus was in an apposite side. If one id denied, the other is to be recognized. But they oppose both; it does not make any sense.

Both John the Baptist and Jesus Christ came to the earth to help people; but they judged them and did not listen to them.

John the Baptist called for repentance. And he lived humble and poor. He did not pay much for drinks and eating. Accordingly, he did not have fellowship with most people. This is a figure of a minister commanding repentance.

And they judged him having demon.

Jesus lived with tax collectors and sinners. He understood them and comforted. He had fellowship with them. He lived with the isolated and solved their problems. And wicked people judged Jesus as the friend of tax collectors and sinners.

What about this generation we are living? How are we living? In the eyes of Jesus, what would be the typical figure of this generation?

It is so-called "post-modernism." It means "the era after modernism." Authority is lost; they behavior as they please in their eyes.

Thinking of the Scripture given today, people in Jesus' time, they did as they pleased.

Apparently, the life styles in the time of Jesus and today seem not to be changed significantly.

Some months before, we read the book of Judges, "In those days, Israel had no king everyone did as they saw fit" (Judges 21:25).

Before mentioning change of times, we need to talk about the common sinfulness of humanity. No matter times changed, humanity remains the same. Human beings are sinners. Sin makes humans not to reconcile each other.

Like the children in a marketplace, humans do not agree with anyone who asks to play a certain game. So to speak, they makes factions.

The epistle to Galathians 5 has the fruits of the sinful nature: 1. sexual immorality, 2. impurity, 3. debauchery, 4. ideolatry, 5. witchcraft; 6. hatred, 7. discord, 8. jealously, 9. fits of rage, 10. selfish ambition, 11. dissensions, 12. factions, 13. envy, 14. drunkenness, 15. orgies, 16. and the like.

The selfish ambition is dissention. They cannot work harmoniously but fight each other. Out of the 15 fruits, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, and 15 are related to the separation.

What kind of song shall we sing? Let's think of it. Some have excellent voices by birth. Out of a number of miracles, to have a good voice is more mysterious.

In today's Scripture, there are expressions, like 1. they does not dance with flute, 2. they do not mourn with a dirge. There are two kinds of songs. 1. merrily song, singing with flute; 2. a dirge singing with tears.

The problem is in the fact that the people of the generation did not dance with flute, did not mourn with the dirge. This is a tragedy not only in the time of Jesus but today. This is the most miserable thing in history.

What is family? A family is a group of people sharing joy and sorrow. Isn't it?

Suppose a family when they come back home from work and school, they close their doors. Do you feel a sweet home there?

When you had prize from school, home is where you would like to share your joy. If not, there is no reason for you to go back home.

During the last week, I shared stories of my middle school with my wife. My school was not recognized as a regular school. I had to take national exam for getting qualification to take high school entrance exam. The number of all the students of the school was about 80. Many of them were parentless coming from orphanage.

When I was sixth grader, after school, I was playing with my friends without completing homework. And a seventh grader was walking the street stretching one palm to the sky getting drops of rain into his hand. It was a raining afternoon. He was so serious that I thought he would count the rain drops.

At that time, I did not pay enough attention to him. However, as I grew up, the scene revived within me especially when it rained.

No one came out from the orphanage to meet him when he was wet with heavy rain. Because it was not his home. His walks to the place must have been heavy.

Thinking of the evening when my wife and I wept so seriously, it probably was because of Myung Ihn, our son, who became the same year as the boy walking the street under the rain. It made me to weep; not so sure of my wife.

The day before yesterday, as I gave Myung Ihn a ride to school, it rained. I handed over umbrella as he came in the car. I sensed how he felt uncomfortable. But I asked him to take it because he was in the beginning of flu. Driving near to school, I found no students carried umbrella. I talked to myself, "This guy may not take it!"

I myself did not! At his age, when going out from home to school, in the winter days, my father used to pull sox over pants and said, "See, it is too cold!" Were I a North Korean soldier? As soon as turning a corner, I pulled down the sox.

And Myung Ihn put up the umbrella as he started waling the street to school. What a kind son he was! He must have treated me as a father. My son to his father is better than myself to my father!

After the sto교 of the boy under the rain, I shared another story of a friend. It was the autumn of the third year of middle school. Many of us already left school because of poverty. A friend of them visited teachers' room to say good-bye. His family sold a calf so that he could get a fund for monthly payment of a room in a city. He was about to work at a factory as a worker.

He was one of few friends who passed the national exam of the year. He was the best student in math and science. While saying good-bye, he bursted into teats. "I want to study at high school!" He fall down to the ground of the room and cried.

Sharing the story, I wept with my wife. And I thanked my wife who com-passioned with me, sharing the sad stories.

After five years since the friend left school with tears, I was a college student. I taught math and English at an evening school. All students were factory workers. One evening after school, a girl visited me and asked, "Do you know Gijoon Lee?" I answered, "Yes I do. He was my class mate in middle school. And how do you know him?" And she answered, "He is my brother." I could find similarity between the two around the eyes.

I thank my wife who tears much more than me sharing this kinds of sad story. Now I appreciate it very much.

I have a son who put up the umbrella for his dad; and I have a wife who drops tears hearing her husband's sad story of past days. Certainly, God gave me this precious family to me.

In addition, as I share this personal stories, all you listen to me seriously without criticizing me, saying, "So what?" I am a happy pastor with such a beautiful church.

We did not come to this world in order to have well-being just for ourselves. We need to live together. Difficulties shared with loving ones become beautiful stories. Is there any more touchable stories than what we experienced hardship in the past?

To narrate stories of hardtime with joy and delight, two conditions are to be met. 1. Now is to be better. 2. We need to have friends or family mebers who would like to listen to us with com-passion.

These two are blessings. With the blessings of God, all things become like these.

The later becomes better. With God's blessings, no matter how hard was the beginning, the later be better. Later, we could talk about the past with a tearful joy.

A man of divine blessing, he gets good wife.

As the comparison in Jesus' story, the world is like a marketplace. Many come and go. But the serious problem is in the fact that we do not have friends to share our stories. One tears and the other sings. After invention of apartment, the situation became worse. Divided by a wall, two critically opposite situations happen simultaneously. We don't have to visit hell to feel misfortune.

A fun story about Kingdom of God and hell. Same food and same long chopsticks. But in the Kingdom of Heaven, they feed each other. They wree so happy there.

In the hell, however, each attempted to eat for himself. With the long chopsticks, they could not succeed eating food. They fought each other.

I don't believe this story is real. Someone created this story to say about a side of the two places.

To be sure, if sharing minds, helping each other, right there you may feel Kingdom of God. If you think of yourself only, however, you will experience the suffering of the hell.

The generation Jesus criticized cannot be found in church and Christian home. This is what Jesus wanted to make. First, church must be loving community.

With sad song, we must sing sadly. With joy, we need to celebrate with delight. Here, we may learn the true model of a family.

A true Christian family learn from church. A good church makes a good family.

Remember: the secret of beautiful family is in beautiful church life. A good family comes from a good church. Is there any educational institute where multiple generations come together and listen to the same pastor's sermon, reading the same book, the Bible?

In order to make a good family, we need to pray for who do not come to church. It is evangelization. Last week, I heard a story of a man of fifties. He shared his story in the time of baptism.

He married to a Christian woman. He did not permit her going to church in the name of his Buddhist parents. His wife obeyed him. After the death of his parents, however, he did not keep the promise. She asked days and nights. After all, he permitted her to go to church. She brought her daught to church.

At a certain point, the daughter asked him to go to church at least once. Each time when he heard it. he got angry. One day, a high school student daughter asked "What will you promise me if I got the first place in my school?" He said, "I will do all you ask me." And to his surprise, she really make the first place. She asked him, crying, "Dad, you promised me. My only hope is your going to church."

He went church and met God. He recognized that God has changed his family life totally. And he decided to be baptized.

Church life is to change family acoording to the love of God. With the change of family, the society will be changed. Because all things come from family. Have you ever heard "Happy family makes all things well"? With peace at home, all will be done peacefully.

We pray that his small change works for the world where we live. We pray the Kingdom of God be established here in the earth. We want to experience the joy of the Kingdom, and when Jesus comes, we would like to go to the eternal Kingdom. We thank God for all this hope. Amen.
