은혜의 주님. 감사드립니다. 낭패와 실망 당할 때마다 주님을 생각합니다. 주님께서 우리를 살리시기 위해 십자가를 지셨습니다. 주님께서 죽으심으로써 우리가 살았습니다. 주님께서 고난을 당하심으로써 우리가 평화를 누립니다. 저희들의 모든 죄를 십자가의 보혈로 정결케 해 주심을 믿습니다. 오늘 성도들이 모여 주님께 예배드립니다. 저희들의 신령과 진정으로써 주님께 경배합니다. 주님 홀로 영광 받으시옵소서. 천하에 있는 모든 성도들의 예배를 받아주시옵고, 진정으로 예배하는 자들에게 평강의 은총을 내려 주시옵소서. 예수님 이름으로 기도합니다. 아멘. Gracious Lord. Whenever we fail and fall we remember of you. You died on the Cross to save us. You saved us through your death. You gave us peace through your suffering. We believe that you clensed our sins through the blood of the Cross. All we worship you together with the Spirit and the Truth. May your name only be glorified. Give all those who worship you today the peace and the grace. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Honest to God in History
호세아 Hosea 14:1-3
이스라엘아, 네 하나님 여호와께로 돌아 오라. 네가 불의함을 인하여 엎드러졌느니라. 너는 말씀을 가지고 여호와께로 돌아 와서 아뢰기를 ‘모든 불의를 제하시고 선한 바를 받으소서. 우리가 입술로 수송아지를 대신하여 주께 드리리이다. 우리가 앗수르의 구원을 의지하지 아니하며, 말을 타지 아니하며, 다시는 우리의 손으로 지은 것을 향하여 너희는 우리 신이라 하지 아니하오리니, 이는 고아가 주께로 말미암아 긍휼을 얻음이니이다’ 할지니라. Israle, return unto the Lord thy God; for thou hast fallen by thine iniquity. Take with you words, and turn to the Lord: say unto him, "Take away all iniquity, and receive us graciously: so will we render the calves of our lips. Asshur shall not save us; we will not ride upon horses: neither will we say any more to the work of our hands, 'Ye are our gods': for in thee the fatherless findeth mercy."
호세아는 주전 8세기에 활동했던 예언자입니다. 정확하게는 750-725 BC 였습니다. 그때는 북 이스라엘과 남 유다가 서로 대치하면서 공존했습니다. 오늘 남북한이 대치하는 모양과 흡사했습니다. 호세아는 북 이스라엘에서 활동했습니다. 동시대 예언자는 세 명이 더 있습니다. 북쪽에서는 아모스가 활동했고, 남쪽에서는 이사야와 미가가 예언활동 했습니다. Hosea (750-725 BC) was a prophet served God in the 8th century BC. At that time, the northern Israel and the southern Judah co-existed, confronting each other. Three more prophets worked then. In the north, there was Amos. In the South, Isaiah and Micah ministered.
북 이스라엘은 남 유다보다 상대적으로 부강했습니다. 연속되는 풍년으로 소출이 많았습니다. 여호보암 2세(793-753 BC)는 40년이라는 장기간을 통치하면서 정권을 안정시켰습니다. 당시 고대 근동의 최강국이었던 앗시리아는 내부 사정 때문에 이스라엘 지역을 내버려두었습니다. 북 이스라엘은 대단히 교만해졌습니다. 통치자들은 가난한 자들의 인권을 유린했습니다. The northern Israel was stronger than the southern Judah. They had continual good harvest. Jeroboam II (793-753 BC) ruled over Israel about 40 years and stabilized the state. Assyria, the strongest among the ancient Near Eastern superpowers, did not attack Israel because of their inner conflicts. Israel became very arrogant. The haves infringed upon the personal rights of the have-nots.
신 한 켤레 값으로 가난한 자들을 사고 팔았습니다. 부자들은 가난한 자들의 집을 빼앗았습니다. 전답도 빼앗고 심지어 옷도 탈취했습니다. They sold the poor people at a low price. They took houses away from the poor. They robbed lands and even clothes.
호세아 선지자가 활동한 것은 750에서 725까지 25년 간 이었습니다. 그가 활동을 마치고 나서 겨우 3년이 지나서 북 이스라엘은 앗시리아에게 멸망당했습니다. 모든 성읍들은 철저하게 파괴되었습니다. 백성들은 대부분 포로로 잡혀갔습니다. 그 땅에는 이방 사람들을 대신 이사시켜 살게 했습니다. The years of Hosea's activity was 25 years, from 750 to 725 BC. Only three years after his activity, Israel was destroyed by Assyria. All the cities were totally destroyed. Most people were deported to Assyria. Instead of Israelites, Assyria put foreign peoples in the land of Israel.
호세아의 경고를 무시한 이스라엘은 하나님의 벌을 피할 수 없었습니다. 하나님께서는 호세아를 통해, 이스라엘이 이집트에서 나와 광야생활 할 때를 기억하게 하셨습니다. 그 때는 정말 이스라엘이 아무 것도 아닌 때였습니다. 땅도 없었고 집도 없었습니다. 사막을 유랑하는 나그네였습니다. The people of the northern Israel who ignored the warnings of Hosea could not escape from the punishment of God. Using Hosea, God reminded Israel of the days of desert wandering. They were nothing then. They did not have land nor houses. They were wanderers.
호세아 선지자에게 명령하셨습니다. "음탕한 여자 고멜을 아내로 얻으라"고 하셨습니다. 왜냐하면 이 땅이 하나님을 버리고 영적으로 음행했기 때문이라 하셨습니다. (호세아 1:2). 이스라엘은 음탕한 고멜처럼 그 영적 남편 하나님께 신실하지 못한 나라였습니다. God commanded Hosea, "Go, take unto thee a wife of whoredoms and children of woredoms: for the land hath committed great whoredom, departing from the Lord." (Hosea 1:2) Like Gomer, the unfaithful wife to Hosea, Israel was the country not faithful to God.
그렇지만 하나님께서는 이스라엘을 회복시키시고 복 주시기로 약속하셨습니다. 이제 하나님께로 돌아오기만 하면 과거의 모든 죄악을 다 씻으시고 새로운 민족으로 나게 하실 것입니다. However, God promised that if she returns to God, God would recover and bless her. Only if she come back to God, He would purify all the sins and make her a new nation.
그리고 주님께서 말씀하셨습니다. “깨닫지 못하는 백성은 패망하리라!” (호세아 4:14하) And God said, "Therefore the people that doth not understand shall fall." (Hosea 4:14c).
하나님께서 호세아를 통해 하신 말씀은 “이스라엘이 깨닫고 돌이켜 하나님께로 돌아오라”는 것이었습니다. “그러므로 너는 네 하나님께로 돌이켜서 긍휼과 공의를 지키며, 계속해서 네 하나님을 바랄지니라.” What God said to Israel through Hosea was that they must come back to God with full understanding of the Word of God. "Therefore turn thou to thy God: keep mercy and judgment, and wait on thy God continually." (호세아 Hosea 12:6)
오늘 읽은 본문은 호세아서의 결론부분입니다. 호세아는 외칩니다. “이스라엘아 하나님께로 돌아오라! 입술을 정결케 하여, 송아지 대신 주님을 찬양하라. 앗시리아의 은혜를 구하지 말라.” Today's scripture is a conclusive part of the book of Hosea. "O Israel, return to the Lord thy God. Purify your lips with the Word of God. Praise the LOrd. Do not ask for the grace of Assyria."
하나님께서 원하시는 것은 송아지를 드리는 ‘형식적인 제사’가 아닙니다. 호세아는 일상생활 가운데 주님을 찬양하는 진정한 제사를 드리라고 권고하고 있습니다. What God wants to have is not a formal sacrifice with the calves. Hosea urges Israel to praise the Lord with the purified lips.
오늘 하나님께서 우리에게 요구하시는 것은 마음이 없이 드리는 형식적 예배가 아닙니다. 받은 바 말씀을 실천하는 삶입니다. What God asks us today is not a formal worship without hearts. It is our lives following the Word of God.
8월이 되었습니다. 2005년 8월은 한국 사람들에게 특별한 의미가 있습니다. 하나님께서 우리 민족을 일제의 손아귀에서 해방시켜 주신 지 60년이 되는 달입니다. 1910년부터 치면, 일본은 한국을 36년 동안 식민통치했습니다. August has come. This August of 2005 has a special meaning for Korean people. This is the very month reaching to the 60th year since God liberated Korea from the bondage of Japan. Beginning 1910, Japan colonized Korea over 36 years.
우리는 하나님의 은혜를 잊으면 안됩니다. 하나님께서 이스라엘을 애굽의 손에서 해방시키셨던 것처럼, 우리를 일본의 손에서 살려주셨습니다. We must not forget the grace of God. Just as God liberated Israel from the hands of Egpyt, he saved Korea from the rule of Japan.
이스라엘이 애굽에서 나오던 날을 잊어버린 것이 화가 된 것처럼, 우리가 일본의 손아귀에서 해방된 것을 잊으면 불행을 다시 맞게 될 것입니다. Israel's ignorance of the past salvation brought forth God's punishment.
역사를 망각하는 사람은 역사의 불행을 반복하기 마련입니다. 무엇보다, 하나님의 인도하심을 잊어버리고 스스로 잘난 것으로 오해하는 사람은, 하나님의 진노하심을 피할 수 없습니다.If we forget what God had done for us in the days of Japanese rule, we shall meet the same kind of misfortune. Whoever forgets history will repeat mistakes again and again. First of all, any people who forget God's guidance and misunderstand that they are something cannot escape from God and his punishment.
신문을 조금만 자세히 읽는다면, 지금 일본과 중국은 한반도 역사를 왜곡하고 있음을 알게 될 것입니다. 사실이 아닌 것을 사실처럼 기록하고, 그것을 교과서 삼아 어린 학생들에게 가르치고 있습니다. With more careful reading of news papers, you may recognize that Japan and China distort history of Korean peninsula and teach it to their children.
일본은 한반도 침략을 미화합니다. 한반도의 근대화를 크게 도와주었다는 것입니다. 정신대 같은 것도 강제성이 전혀 없었다고 주장합니다. Japan beautifies the invasion to the Korean peninsula. They insist that Japan helped Korean industrialization. In case of Jungsindae, they insist that all Korean girls volunteerly joined the group.
중국은 고구려 역사를 왜곡해서, 고구려가 중국의 일부였다고 억지를 부립니다. 지금 중국 쪽에 있는 고구려 유적들은 중국의 입장에서 새롭게 조명되고 있습니다. China distorts the history of Koguryo and argue that Koguryo was part of China. The Koguryo remains in China are newly interpreted according to Chinese interest.
우리는 역사를 바로 공부해야 합니다. 자연과학 공부도 중요하지만, 인문과학, 그 중에도 역사공부는 참 중요합니다. 일부가 생각하듯 역사공부는 지나간 사실을 공부하고 마치는 것이 아닙니다. 과거사는 현재사입니다. 현재의 필요에 따라 과거를 재해석하는 것입니다. 과거 해석이 현재의 삶에 의미를 주기 때문입니다. 의미가 있는 일에는 ‘힘’이 생겨납니다. We need to study history seriously. Science is important. But humanities, history above all, is very important. Studying history is not studying what happened in the past. History is realized in today. Historiography is the interpretation the past according to today's interest. The interpretation of the past gives the light of meaning for today. Where there is meaning, there is power.
역사에서 무엇을 배울 것인가? 하나님의 역사를 깨달아야 합니다. 하나님께서 역사하신 사실을 알면서, 과거에 역사 하신 하나님께서 오늘도 살아 계심을 알아야 합니다. What shall we learn from history? We need to understand what God had done. Understanding God and his works, we could learn that God works here and now.
성경은 참 귀한 책입니다. 이 책에서 우리는 이스라엘 역사를 배웁니다. 이스라엘 역사는 참 대단히 한국 역사와 닮았습니다. 지정학적인 역건이 그렇습니다. 강대국들이 만나는 길목입니다. The Bible is very precious. The Bible teaches us the history of Israel. Iseael's history is similar to that of Korea. Geopolitically, Israel and Korea are alike. Its location is where the superpowers meet.
오랫동안 외세에 시달렸다는 점도 그렇습니다. 그렇지만 외세보다 더 오래 생존했다는 점도 그렇습니다. Both have been invaded by superpowers. Both survived longer than superpowers.
이스라엘과 한국은 수도 없는 외국 침략에 시달렸습니다. 1592년 임진년에 발발한 임진왜란은 좋은 예입니다. 이 전쟁은 1598년에 가서야 끝납니다. 그동안 일본과 중국 명나라는 한반도를 쑥밭으로 만들었습니다. 그렇지만 이 전쟁으로 일본은 도요토미 히데요시가 실각하고, 중국은 명나라가 청나라로 대체됩니다. 조선은 그대로 생존했습니다. Both Israel and Korea had been invaded a number of times by superpowers. A good example in Korea is the Imjin Japan-Korea War (1592-98). Japan and China brought total destruction to Korea. As a result, however, in China Ming dynasty disappeared and Ching appeared; in Japan, Toyotomy lost his power.
이와 비슷한 현상이 이스라엘과 주변 강대국들 사이에 많이 발생했습니다. A number of similar events happened in the relationship bewteen Iarael and superpowers.
대단히 종교적인 민족이라는 점에서도 이스라엘과 한국은 비슷합니다. Both have been very much religious.
우리 1세들은 한국사 공부 배경이 있습니다. 이것은 성경 이해에 큰 도움을 줍니다. First generation have Korean history background. This helps understanding the Bible.
2세들은 한국사 공부할 기회가 없었습니다. 그렇지만 그들은 성경을 읽으면서 한국사를 이해할 수 있습니다. 성경이 한국사 공부의 좋은 길잡이가 됩니다. Second generation did not chance to study Korean history. But they read the Bible earlier and better than Korean history. But their understanding of the Bible helps the study of Korean history.
한국이 기독교가 번성하는 데는 이런 이유가 있다고 생각합니다. 성경의 이스라엘과 한국이 참 비슷한 것입니다. 그렇지만, 이것은 유리한 조건일 뿐입니다. 여기서 우리가 노력하지 않으면 이런 유리한 조건은 하나의 조건에 지나지 않을 것입니다. I think there is some reasons like this in Korean church's growth: the similarity between Israel and Korea. But this is but a good condition. Without proper effort, this good condition will be but a condition.
과거를 돌아보아야 합니다. 거기서 우리는 하나님의 섭리를 깨달아야 합니다. 깨닫지 못하는 백성은 패망합니다. 먼저 깨닫고, 자녀들에게 부지런히 가르쳐야 합니다. Let us remember the past. Let us understand God's will that worked in the days. People without understanding will fall. We need to understand first, and teach our children what we learned from the past.
호세아의 예언을 기억합시다. 오늘 호세아는 이스라엘에게 보내신 주님의 종으로 그치지 않습니다. 오늘 우리는 그의 음성을 듣습니다. 하나님의 은혜를 깨닫습니다. 하나님께서 오늘 우리에게 호세아를 보내 주셨습니다. Let us remember the prophecy of Hosea. Hosea is not a prophet for Israel but for us today. We listen to him. We recognize the amazing grace of God. God sent Hosea to us today.
한 손에는 성경을, 다른 손에는 한국사를 들어야 합니다. 이것이 이민 1세대나 2세대나 공히 가져야 할 태도입니다. 이렇게 되면 우리는 불행한 과거를 반복하지 않게 될 것입니다. We need to carry the Bible at one hand, and Korean history book at the other. This is what both first generation and the second have to have. This is the way we shall not repeat the miserable history again.
이런 태도는 한국 그리스도인에게만 국한된 것일까요? 그렇지 않습니다. 특수함은 보편성 속에 있을 때 정당한 법입니다. 중국인, 일본인, 미국인, 아프리카인 모두가 저들의 역사공부와 함께 성경을 읽어야 합니다. 그렇게 되면, 하나님께서 세계 모든 나라의 역사를 주관하시는 분이심을 알게 될 것입니다. 세계 모든 나라 백성들이 서로서로 사랑하면서 한 형제 자매로서 주님을 섬기게 될 것입니다. 이것이 주님께서 진정으로 원하시는 일입니다. Is this understanding confined to Korean only? Not at all. Speciality is taken granted only in the context of universality. All the peoples of the world including Chinese, Japanese, American, and Africans are to read the Bible with their history study. If so, they could understand that God is the universal God who controls all the history of the world. All the peoples of the world might recognize to be their brothers and sisters, and they would worship one God as his children. This is what God really wants.
이런 점에서 호세아 본문은 세계 모든 민족들에게 주는 공통적인 메시지가 있습니다. 지나간 과거를 돌아보아야 합니다. 하나님의 섭리를 기억해야 합니다. 현재를 반성하고, 미래를 하나님께 맡겨야 합니다. In this sense, the prophecy of Hosea teaches all the peoples of the World. We need to review the past. We must remember what God did for us. Check our present, and rely on God for our future.
일본 사람들의 만행을 용서해야 합니다. 그러나, 그들의 행위는 잊지 말아야 합니다. 잊으면 똑같은 일을 당할 것입니다. 죄인은 용서하되 죄는 잊지 말아야 하는 원리와 같습니다. We must forgive Japanese, but not forget what they did. If we forget, we may get the same suffering later. It is like the very principle that we forgive sinners but not forget the sins.
역사 앞에서, 우리는 하나님 앞에 정직해야 합니다. 우리의 모든 죄를 회개하고 주님 앞에 서야 합니다. 지나간 날의 잘못을 용서 구하고, 오늘 우리의 삶의 태도를 바꿉니다. In front of history, we are to be honest to God. Repenting all the sins, we are to go forward to God. Changing our past wrong lives, we are to pray to God for another new lives.
호세아와 같이, 우리는 시대의 등불을 높이 들어야 합니다. 영원한 등불, 역사의 어둠을 걷어내는 불빛은 하나님 말씀입니다. 말씀에 선 사람들은 하나님의 일군입니다. 한국 역사를 돌아볼 때, 진정한 그리스도인들이 참된 지도력을 지닌 사람들이었습니다. Like Hosea, we must raise the light of the times. The eternal light, removing the darkness of history, is the Word of God. All who are standing with the Word are servants of God. Looking back of Korean history, pure Christians were the true leaders.
3.1운동 때 기독교인은 1%를 조금 넘었습니다. 그러나, 3.1운동의 실질적인 지도자는 기독교인들이었습니다. 또, 방방곡곡에 자리잡은 교회가 점과 선의 네트워크를 형성했습니다. 교회는 영적이면서 물질적 배경을 제공했고, 그로써 전국적인 운동이 일어나게 된 것입니다. In 1919, at the March First Movement, Christians were just over 1% in Korea. The actual leaders of the Movement, however, were Christians. The churches scattered all over the country formed a network of dots and lines. Church provided the spiritual and physical matrix of the nation-wide movement.
오늘은 우리가 나라와 민족의 자유, 세계의 평화를 위해 일해야 합니다. 그리스도인의 삶은 혼자의 행복을 추구하는 것이 아닙니다. 그리스도인은 인류 모두가 참된 행복의 삶을 살아가도록 힘쓰는 사람들입니다. 예수님께서 그러셨던 것처럼. Today, we are to work for nations for their freedom, and for the world for its peace. Christians are not the people asking for their selfish happiness. Christians are those who work for the world, just as Jesus Christ our Savior did.
기도 Prayer
은혜로우신 주님. 오늘 저희들은 호세아 예언자를 통해 주님의 음성을 들었습니다. 주님께서 우리를 구원해 주신 은혜를 이제 다시 깨닫습니다. 모든 일에 주님을 인정해 드릴 수 있게 하옵소서. 그리하여 주님 중심으로 우리의 내일을 개척해 나갈 수 있도록 축복하옵소서. 예수님 이름으로 기도합니다. 아멘. O gracious Lord. We have heard your voice through the prophecy of Hosea. We now understand the amazing grace of your salvation. Let us recognized you at all the moments, so that we might develop our future with Jesus Christ centered in us. In Jesus's name, Amen.

사랑하는 하나님. 저희들에게 은혜를 베풀어 주셔서 감사합니다. 믿음으로 심을 때마다 결실을 거두게 해 주셔서 감사합니다. 무엇보다 저희들의 삶이 주님께 바쳐질 때, 한 알의 밀알처럼 썩어지는 은혜를 허락하시니 감사합니다. 저희들이 주님의 십자가 아래서 죽어 땅에 묻힐 때, 많은 열매를 바라보게 하옵소서. 이 모든 열매를 주님께 드리게 하옵소서. 가정에 참된 기쁨을 날마다 허락하옵소서. 예수님 이름으로 기도합니다. 아멘. O loving God. We thank you for the wonderful daily grace. We thank you for helping us get fruits each time when we sow with faith. First of all, we thank you for giving us the opportunity to be buried as a seed. Let us have the ultimate hope when we look forward to see you there. Provide our homes with true joy and happiness. Assyria, the strongest among the ancient Near Eastern superpowers, did not attack Israel because of their inner conflicts. Israel became very arrogant. The haves infringed upon the personal rights of the have-nots.
신 한 켤레 값으로 가난한 자들을 사고 팔았습니다. 부자들은 가난한 자들의 집을 빼앗았습니다. 전답도 빼앗고 심지어 옷도 탈취했습니다. They sold the poor people at a low price. They took houses away from the poor. They robbed lands and even clothes.
호세아 선지자가 활동한 것은 750에서 725까지 25년 간 이었습니다. 그가 활동을 마치고 나서 겨우 3년이 지나서 북 이스라엘은 앗시리아에게 멸망당했습니다. 모든 성읍들은 철저하게 파괴되었습니다. 백성들은 대부분 포로로 잡혀갔습니다. 그 땅에는 이방 사람들을 대신 이사시켜 살게 했습니다. The years of Hosea's activity was 25 years, from 750 to 725 BC. Only three years after his activity, Israel was destroyed by Assyria. All the cities were totally destroyed. Most people were deported to Assyria. Instead of Israelites, Assyria put foreign peoples in the land of Israel.
호세아의 경고를 무시한 이스라엘은 하나님의 벌을 피할 수 없었습니다. 하나님께서는 호세아를 통해, 이스라엘이 이집트에서 나와 광야생활 할 때를 기억하게 하셨습니다. 그 때는 정말 이스라엘이 아무 것도 아닌 때였습니다. 땅도 없었고 집도 없었습니다. 사막을 유랑하는 나그네였습니다. The people of the northern Israel who ignored the warnings of Hosea could not escape from the punishment of God. Using Hosea, God reminded Israel of the days of desert wandering. They were nothing then. They did not have land nor houses. They were wanderers.
호세아 선지자에게 명령하셨습니다. "음탕한 여자 고멜을 아내로 얻으라"고 하셨습니다. 왜냐하면 이 땅이 하나님을 버리고 영적으로 음행했기 때문이라 하셨습니다. (호세아 1:2). 이스라엘은 음탕한 고멜처럼 그 영적 남편 하나님께 신실하지 못한 나라였습니다. God commanded Hosea, "Go, take unto thee a wife of whoredoms and children of woredoms: for the land hath committed great whoredom, departing from the Lord." (Hosea 1:2) Like Gomer, the unfaithful wife to Hosea, Israel was the country not faithful to God.
그렇지만 하나님께서는 이스라엘을 회복시키시고 복 주시기로 약속하셨습니다. 이제 하나님께로 돌아오기만 하면 과거의 모든 죄악을 다 씻으시고 새로운 민족으로 나게 하실 것입니다. However, God promised that if she returns to God, God would recover and bless her. Only if she come back to God, He would purify all the sins and make her a new nation.
그리고 주님께서 말씀하셨습니다. “깨닫지 못하는 백성은 패망하리라!” (호세아 4:14하) And God said, "Therefore the people that doth not understand shall fall." (Hosea 4:14c).
하나님께서 호세아를 통해 하신 말씀은 “이스라엘이 깨닫고 돌이켜 하나님께로 돌아오라”는 것이었습니다. “그러므로 너는 네 하나님께로 돌이켜서 긍휼과 공의를 지키며, 계속해서 네 하나님을 바랄지니라.” What God said to Israel through Hosea was that they must come back to God with full understanding of the Word of God. "Therefore turn thou to thy God: keep mercy and judgment, and wait on thy God continually." (호세아 Hosea 12:6)
오늘 읽은 본문은 호세아서의 결론부분입니다. 호세아는 외칩니다. “이스라엘아 하나님께로 돌아오라! 입술을 정결케 하여, 송아지 대신 주님을 찬양하라. 앗시리아의 은혜를 구하지 말라.” Today's scripture is a conclusive part of the book of Hosea. "O Israel, return to the Lord thy God. Purify your lips with the Word of God. Praise the LOrd. Do not ask for the grace of Assyria."
하나님께서 원하시는 것은 송아지를 드리는 ‘형식적인 제사’가 아닙니다. 호세아는 일상생활 가운데 주님을 찬양하는 진정한 제사를 드리라고 권고하고 있습니다. What God wants to have is not a formal sacrifice with the calves. Hosea urges Israel to praise the Lord with the purified lips.
오늘 하나님께서 우리에게 요구하시는 것은 마음이 없이 드리는 형식적 예배가 아닙니다. 받은 바 말씀을 실천하는 삶입니다. What God asks us today is not a formal worship without hearts. It is our lives following the Word of God.
8월이 되었습니다. 2005년 8월은 한국 사람들에게 특별한 의미가 있습니다. 하나님께서 우리 민족을 일제의 손아귀에서 해방시켜 주신 지 60년이 되는 달입니다. 1910년부터 치면, 일본은 한국을 36년 동안 식민통치했습니다. August has come. This August of 2005 has a special meaning for Korean people. This is the very month reaching to the 60th year since God liberated Korea from the bondage of Japan. Beginning 1910, Japan colonized Korea over 36 years.
우리는 하나님의 은혜를 잊으면 안됩니다. 하나님께서 이스라엘을 애굽의 손에서 해방시키셨던 것처럼, 우리를 일본의 손에서 살려주셨습니다. We must not forget the grace of God. Just as God liberated Israel from the hands of Egpyt, he saved Korea from the rule of Japan.
이스라엘이 애굽에서 나오던 날을 잊어버린 것이 화가 된 것처럼, 우리가 일본의 손아귀에서 해방된 것을 잊으면 불행을 다시 맞게 될 것입니다. Israel's ignorance of the past salvation brought forth God's punishment.
역사를 망각하는 사람은 역사의 불행을 반복하기 마련입니다. 무엇보다, 하나님의 인도하심을 잊어버리고 스스로 잘난 것으로 오해하는 사람은, 하나님의 진노하심을 피할 수 없습니다.If we forget what God had done for us in the days of Japanese rule, we shall meet the same kind of misfortune. Whoever forgets history will repeat mistakes again and again. First of all, any people who forget God's guidance and misunderstand that they are something cannot escape from God and his punishment.
신문을 조금만 자세히 읽는다면, 지금 일본과 중국은 한반도 역사를 왜곡하고 있음을 알게 될 것입니다. 사실이 아닌 것을 사실처럼 기록하고, 그것을 교과서 삼아 어린 학생들에게 가르치고 있습니다. With more careful reading of news papers, you may recognize that Japan and China distort history of Korean peninsula and teach it to their children.
일본은 한반도 침략을 미화합니다. 한반도의 근대화를 크게 도와주었다는 것입니다. 정신대 같은 것도 강제성이 전혀 없었다고 주장합니다. Japan beautifies the invasion to the Korean peninsula. They insist that Japan helped Korean industrialization. In case of Jungsindae, they insist that all Korean girls volunteerly joined the group.
중국은 고구려 역사를 왜곡해서, 고구려가 중국의 일부였다고 억지를 부립니다. 지금 중국 쪽에 있는 고구려 유적들은 중국의 입장에서 새롭게 조명되고 있습니다. China distorts the history of Koguryo and argue that Koguryo was part of China. The Koguryo remains in China are newly interpreted according to Chinese interest.
우리는 역사를 바로 공부해야 합니다. 자연과학 공부도 중요하지만, 인문과학, 그 중에도 역사공부는 참 중요합니다. 일부가 생각하듯 역사공부는 지나간 사실을 공부하고 마치는 것이 아닙니다. 과거사는 현재사입니다. 현재의 필요에 따라 과거를 재해석하는 것입니다. 과거 해석이 현재의 삶에 의미를 주기 때문입니다. 의미가 있는 일에는 ‘힘’이 생겨납니다. We need to study history seriously. Science is important. But humanities, history above all, is very important. Studying history is not studying what happened in the past. History is realized in today. Historiography is the interpretation the past according to today's interest. The interpretation of the past gives the light of meaning for today. Where there is meaning, there is power.
역사에서 무엇을 배울 것인가? 하나님의 역사를 깨달아야 합니다. 하나님께서 역사하신 사실을 알면서, 과거에 역사 하신 하나님께서 오늘도 살아 계심을 알아야 합니다. What shall we learn from history? We need to understand what God had done. Understanding God and his works, we could learn that God works here and now.
성경은 참 귀한 책입니다. 이 책에서 우리는 이스라엘 역사를 배웁니다. 이스라엘 역사는 참 대단히 한국 역사와 닮았습니다. 지정학적인 역건이 그렇습니다. 강대국들이 만나는 길목입니다. The Bible is very precious. The Bible teaches us the history of Israel. Iseael's history is similar to that of Korea. Geopolitically, Israel and Korea are alike. Its location is where the superpowers meet.
오랫동안 외세에 시달렸다는 점도 그렇습니다. 그렇지만 외세보다 더 오래 생존했다는 점도 그렇습니다. Both have been invaded by superpowers. Both survived longer than superpowers.
이스라엘과 한국은 수도 없는 외국 침략에 시달렸습니다. 1592년 임진년에 발발한 임진왜란은 좋은 예입니다. 이 전쟁은 1598년에 가서야 끝납니다. 그동안 일본과 중국 명나라는 한반도를 쑥밭으로 만들었습니다. 그렇지만 이 전쟁으로 일본은 도요토미 히데요시가 실각하고, 중국은 명나라가 청나라로 대체됩니다. 조선은 그대로 생존했습니다. Both Israel and Korea had been invaded a number of times by superpowers. A good example in Korea is the Imjin Japan-Korea War (1592-98). Japan and China brought total destruction to Korea. As a result, however, in China Ming dynasty disappeared and Ching appeared; in Japan, Toyotomy lost his power.
이와 비슷한 현상이 이스라엘과 주변 강대국들 사이에 많이 발생했습니다. A number of similar events happened in the relationship bewteen Iarael and superpowers.
대단히 종교적인 민족이라는 점에서도 이스라엘과 한국은 비슷합니다. Both have been very much religious.
우리 1세들은 한국사 공부 배경이 있습니다. 이것은 성경 이해에 큰 도움을 줍니다. First generation have Korean history background. This helps understanding the Bible.
2세들은 한국사 공부할 기회가 없었습니다. 그렇지만 그들은 성경을 읽으면서 한국사를 이해할 수 있습니다. 성경이 한국사 공부의 좋은 길잡이가 됩니다. Second generation did not chance to study Korean history. But they read the Bible earlier and better than Korean history. But their understanding of the Bible helps the study of Korean history.
한국이 기독교가 번성하는 데는 이런 이유가 있다고 생각합니다. 성경의 이스라엘과 한국이 참 비슷한 것입니다. 그렇지만, 이것은 유리한 조건일 뿐입니다. 여기서 우리가 노력하지 않으면 이런 유리한 조건은 하나의 조건에 지나지 않을 것입니다. I think there is some reasons like this in Korean church's growth: the similarity between Israel and Korea. But this is but a good condition. Without proper effort, this good condition will be but a condition.
과거를 돌아보아야 합니다. 거기서 우리는 하나님의 섭리를 깨달아야 합니다. 깨닫지 못하는 백성은 패망합니다. 먼저 깨닫고, 자녀들에게 부지런히 가르쳐야 합니다. Let us remember the past. Let us understand God's will that worked in the days. People without understanding will fall. We need to understand first, and teach our children what we learned from the past.
호세아의 예언을 기억합시다. 오늘 호세아는 이스라엘에게 보내신 주님의 종으로 그치지 않습니다. 오늘 우리는 그의 음성을 듣습니다. 하나님의 은혜를 깨닫습니다. 하나님께서 오늘 우리에게 호세아를 보내 주셨습니다. Let us remember the prophecy of Hosea. Hosea is not a prophet for Israel but for us today. We listen to him. We recognize the amazing grace of God. God sent Hosea to us today.
한 손에는 성경을, 다른 손에는 한국사를 들어야 합니다. 이것이 이민 1세대나 2세대나 공히 가져야 할 태도입니다. 이렇게 되면 우리는 불행한 과거를 반복하지 않게 될 것입니다. We need to carry the Bible at one hand, and Korean history book at the other. This is what both first generation and the second have to have. This is the way we shall not repeat the miserable history again.
이런 태도는 한국 그리스도인에게만 국한된 것일까요? 그렇지 않습니다. 특수함은 보편성 속에 있을 때 정당한 법입니다. 중국인, 일본인, 미국인, 아프리카인 모두가 저들의 역사공부와 함께 성경을 읽어야 합니다. 그렇게 되면, 하나님께서 세계 모든 나라의 역사를 주관하시는 분이심을 알게 될 것입니다. 세계 모든 나라 백성들이 서로서로 사랑하면서 한 형제 자매로서 주님을 섬기게 될 것입니다. 이것이 주님께서 진정으로 원하시는 일입니다. Is this understanding confined to Korean only? Not at all. Speciality is taken granted only in the context of universality. All the peoples of the world including Chinese, Japanese, American, and Africans are to read the Bible with their history study. If so, they could understand that God is the universal God who controls all the history of the world. All the peoples of the world might recognize to be their brothers and sisters, and they would worship one God as his children. This is what God really wants.
이런 점에서 호세아 본문은 세계 모든 민족들에게 주는 공통적인 메시지가 있습니다. 지나간 과거를 돌아보아야 합니다. 하나님의 섭리를 기억해야 합니다. 현재를 반성하고, 미래를 하나님께 맡겨야 합니다. In this sense, the prophecy of Hosea teaches all the peoples of the World. We need to review the past. We must remember what God did for us. Check our present, and rely on God for our future.
일본 사람들의 만행을 용서해야 합니다. 그러나, 그들의 행위는 잊지 말아야 합니다. 잊으면 똑같은 일을 당할 것입니다. 죄인은 용서하되 죄는 잊지 말아야 하는 원리와 같습니다. We must forgive Japanese, but not forget what they did. If we forget, we may get the same suffering later. It is like the very principle that we forgive sinners but not forget the sins.
역사 앞에서, 우리는 하나님 앞에 정직해야 합니다. 우리의 모든 죄를 회개하고 주님 앞에 서야 합니다. 지나간 날의 잘못을 용서 구하고, 오늘 우리의 삶의 태도를 바꿉니다. In front of history, we are to be honest to God. Repenting all the sins, we are to go forward to God. Changing our past wrong lives, we are to pray to God for another new lives.
호세아와 같이, 우리는 시대의 등불을 높이 들어야 합니다. 영원한 등불, 역사의 어둠을 걷어내는 불빛은 하나님 말씀입니다. 말씀에 선 사람들은 하나님의 일군입니다. 한국 역사를 돌아볼 때, 진정한 그리스도인들이 참된 지도력을 지닌 사람들이었습니다. Like Hosea, we must raise the light of the times. The eternal light, removing the darkness of history, is the Word of God. All who are standing with the Word are servants of God. Looking back of Korean history, pure Christians were the true leaders.
3.1운동 때 기독교인은 1%를 조금 넘었습니다. 그러나, 3.1운동의 실질적인 지도자는 기독교인들이었습니다. 또, 방방곡곡에 자리잡은 교회가 점과 선의 네트워크를 형성했습니다. 교회는 영적이면서 물질적 배경을 제공했고, 그로써 전국적인 운동이 일어나게 된 것입니다. In 1919, at the March First Movement, Christians were just over 1% in Korea. The actual leaders of the Movement, however, were Christians. The churches scattered all over the country formed a network of dots and lines. Church provided the spiritual and physical matrix of the nation-wide movement.
오늘은 우리가 나라와 민족의 자유, 세계의 평화를 위해 일해야 합니다. 그리스도인의 삶은 혼자의 행복을 추구하는 것이 아닙니다. 그리스도인은 인류 모두가 참된 행복의 삶을 살아가도록 힘쓰는 사람들입니다. 예수님께서 그러셨던 것처럼. Today, we are to work for nations for their freedom, and for the world for its peace. Christians are not the people asking for their selfish happiness. Christians are those who work for the world, just as Jesus Christ our Savior did.

은혜로우신 주님. 오늘 저희들은 호세아 예언자를 통해 주님의 음성을 들었습니다. 주님께서 우리를 구원해 주신 은혜를 이제 다시 깨닫습니다. 모든 일에 주님을 인정해 드릴 수 있게 하옵소서. 그리하여 주님 중심으로 우리의 내일을 개척해 나갈 수 있도록 축복하옵소서. 예수님 이름으로 기도합니다. 아멘. O gracious Lord. We have heard your voice through the prophecy of Hosea. We now understand the amazing grace of your salvation. Let us recognized you at all the moments, so that we might develop our future with Jesus Christ centered in us. In Jesus's name, Amen.

사랑하는 하나님. 저희들에게 은혜를 베풀어 주셔서 감사합니다. 믿음으로 심을 때마다 결실을 거두게 해 주셔서 감사합니다. 무엇보다 저희들의 삶이 주님께 바쳐질 때, 한 알의 밀알처럼 썩어지는 은혜를 허락하시니 감사합니다. 저희들이 주님의 십자가 아래서 죽어 땅에 묻힐 때, 많은 열매를 바라보게 하옵소서. 이 모든 열매를 주님께 드리게 하옵소서. 가정에 참된 기쁨을 날마다 허락하옵소서. 예수님 이름으로 기도합니다. 아멘.
